Creating Art quilts

The last few weeks here have been all about work.  There hasn't been much sewing going on.  I don't know about you, but I crave my sewing and creative time.  One of my nurse friends told me sewing is good for your health and drops your heart rate and blood pressure.   It  helps you relax and takes away the stresses of everyday life.  It also builds your self esteem when you make beautiful creative things.  I know I feel good when I have created something.  How about you?

This week my focus shifted to creating art.  I love to draw and decided to practice some thread play - painting by making a small art quilt.   I used the normal applique method on the lemons and leaves, then added the branches and detail by stitching.  The stitching and thread colors add to the dimension and detail of the piece.  It never seems to turn out like I had imagined, but I'm happy with it.  I have forgotten many of the lessons I learned when I painted many years ago.  This is a mini quilt and measures  8" X 10" and what I love most about mini quilts they finish quickly.

Mr. Create added the lemon slice behind the photo.

Lemon Tree very pretty!  Some of you wanted to see more photo's of
my Pink Lemonade Lemon as it grows.  The tree is small and out of
all the gorgeous blossoms it had this spring only two lemons survived.
Unfortunately the top lemon dried up about a month ago, insert sad face
here.  :(    But the good news is the other lemon is the size of a silver
dollar.  I've been pampering the tree soaking it with water so my one
and only lemon will make it to harvest.  Wish me luck.  I'll share more
photo's with you in a few months.

Thanks for stopping by and have a creative day!

Oh my gosh Kim that is FABULOUS!!! I love it, it's so beautiful - can you come over and show me how to do that? Geez.
Wanna hear something funny? I'm making a lemon tree wall-hanging, lol...not nearly as nice as yours, my dear! More abstract and kind of 60's-ish. When I saw the fabric, that lemon tree song popped into my head and I knew what I had to make with it. My mom used to play that song a LOT!

I hope your lemon thrives on your tree!

This is such a pretty art quilt! I love the stitching, and the quilting around the lemons really make them pop off the "page." I love sewing so much, especially for the creative outlet, that sometimes it's hard to tear myself away to try another art. But I need to start practicing drawing for class. This art quilt is such a great way to render an image from your imagination.

The mini art quilt is a work of art. I love the bright colors. Thanks for sharing. Don't give up on the lemon tree - if it is like ours some years we get a lot of lemons and the next we have to get them from the store.

The details in your mini quilt are beautiful!!

And it's good to know that sewing is good for my BP!!! (although probably not so much when the needle breaks or threads are tangled? hehehe)

Great job!

Wow, Kim, what a fabulous wall hanging. You are so creative and I am sure your blood pressure and self esteem are doing very well after making that beautiful quilt.
I hope you get at least that one lemon this season.
