A Miniature Quilt Finish

Ever notice when you go over to a quilting friends house or the local quilt stores, they always have adorable little quilts displayed?  Little quilts are so charming and I can't seem to make enough of them lately.   I've joined a few miniature quilt swaps and making them can become addictive.  These small cuties work up quicker than regular size quilts and I love the instant gratification.

I made the star blocks 4" finished by drawing out my own paper piecing templates.  This is where a quilting design program like EQ6 or in my case Quilt-Pro 5 for the Mac would come in handy.

I finished the top in February and decided to put mitered borders on it at retreat.  I learned how to make mitered corners years ago, but when you don't use it you lose it as the saying goes.  So I asked my friend Linda to give me a quick lesson.  I drew the feathers around the borders with a purple pen and quilted it on my domestic machine, then finished the binding last week.  The quilt measures approximately 25" X 25".  If you've seen any of the schnibbles quilts made up, this one sort of reminds me of them.

I almost forgot there is one thing I don't like about the purple marking pen.
1.  I drew the feathers on the night before and by the time I went to quilt it the next morning most of the lines had disappeared.  Some were very faint so I had to draw the pattern over again.  Lesson learned, draw pattern on quilt right before quilting.

Thanks for stopping by and have a creative day!!

Sew a Smile, Quilt a Laugh, Quilting Forever and housework whenever.

Very sweeet, I love mini-anythings! As I get older, the thought of making more full-sized quilts is daunting. Congratulations on the machine quilting, it's beautiful!

Love your new mini quilt! And yes, it does remind me of those schnibbles quilts, which I have been admiring on Sherri Howard's blog. Those colors will really brighten things up these days. I like the idea of having more little quilts around the house like this.

I am liking making small ones too, Kim. Infact, just this morning I made myself a post-it of what I want to do before month's end....another small 12"sq. for the house. I love Little/Mini quilts. You're so right - instant gratification.

That's absolutely darling!!!! I love mini's too - easier to quilt, for one thing. I use the blue marking pen - it comes off with water, I just spritz when I'm done. The purple always disappears before I get to it!

Wow, that quilting is amazing. I get so tense when trying to freehand quilt on my little bernina, I usually end up stiff the next day. Thanks for entering the giveaway and goodluck!

Your quilt turned out great Kim. Good job on those mitered borders. I love your feathers too. What a cheery quilt. Several years ago I belonged to a miniature club and you're right, making mini's is addictive. Hope you plan to keep this one.

Lovely little quilt Kim. I haven't tried making mini quilts, not sure I'd have the patience. The machine quilting is wonderful.

There is another marking pen out that will not disappear so quickly. It is called "The Fine Line" water erasable marking pen. It's a blue pen which I have found very useful. It doesn't come off until you use just plain water first to remove it. :0)
Your little quilt is very cute!
