Hexagon - GFG Quilt Progress

Say hello to sweet little Fred!  Fred's my little quilt inspector and
always has to be the center of attention.  Since he hasn't appeared
on the blog in awhile he wouldn't budge until I took this shot.

You ask why Fred is looking up, because mom had to get up
on a ladder to fit the whole quilt in the photo.  I'm excited to
share my hexagon quilt with you since it is really beginning
to take shape.

I call this my "Forever Project" because I knew it was a huge
undertaking and would take me about 10 years to finish.  I
often ask myself why I didn't make a small pillow to satisfy
my urge to sew hexies.

It has taken me 11 years to get this far, but in my defense it
was started as my traveling project.  I only worked on it
when I traveled on a plane trip or in our motorhome.
I collected the red fabrics over the years in the quilt shops
I visited along the way from Alaska to Arizona.  So this
quilt will be a reminder of many happy travels.

My first instinct was to make this quilt in the traditional
Grandmother's Flower Garden style pattern, but when I laid
the blocks out it didn't speak to me.  I abandoned that idea
for more contrast with the row design which gives it a more
modern feel.

This next photo shows the length of the quilt.

My plan is to make a queen size comforter quilt. There are
96 blocks and 8 rows assembled and I have 3-4 additional
rows to stitch.  To date I have sewn a total of 120 blocks
and assembled 2052 hexies with more to stitch.

Recently I discovered I can use a water soluble glue stick to
attach the fabrics to the paper pieces without sewing a single
stitch.  It makes the process so quick and easy.   If you think
you might be interested in trying some hex blocks, I would
be happy to share my technique with a quick tutorial.

Last summer I picked up the quilt again and decided to make
some progress and added 3 additional rows.   A little
encouragement from my girlfriend who was visiting helped
a lot.  I hope to gain some ground again this summer.
Wish me luck!

Are you working on any hand projects lately?  I would
love to see your hex quilt progress.

Thanks for stopping by and have a creative day!

what a cool project! Good for you for sticking with it for so long. It looks like you are really making a lot of progress. Sounds like it's going to be a big one! Love your cute models!

I haven't been working on any hand sewing projects lately, but I do kinda miss them for the portability. I have three quilts that need the binding hand sewn to the back, so I hope to finish those once my semester ends in a couple weeks.

Oh, my goodness, Kim, that is totally awesome. What memories you can recall as you look at the fabrics while adding more hexies. Just love it.
I have put my hexies away for awhile.

AMAZING! Love the colors and the way you made them into rows instead of the normal GFG. I have been working on one for about 7 months and have years ahead of me before I can even dream of seeing something the size you have achieved.

Fred is a cutie...

and yeah, would love to see your tutorial - I have a hexie project in mind - even have the papers and the fabrics and how I want to lay it out all in a bag (a PIG!!) But I cannot start it until I get my Heart's Garden done!!!

That is absolutely awe-inspiring! It seems Fred loves it too! Definitely a long-term project - my very first quilt took me 20 years to finish, and it was a simple patchwork! This is so very, very beautiful, Kim!

It's gorgeous! And, I commend you for sticking with it so long. I'm anxious to watch your progress this summer. I'm also working on hexies and, like you, I won't be making the traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden. I'm assembling mine as diamonds and I haven't decided anything beyond that point. At the moment, I can't work on it since it hurts my bad shoulder to hand sew. -sigh-
